Easter island

Hi Girlies,
Gpa hasn’t been doing much posting because the ship internet has been down.  We are in such a remote area of the South Pacific that we are not under the satellite footprint.  But I’ll do this post about Easter Island and put it on your blog when I can.
What can I say about Easter Island?  Beautiful,  amazing, magical, mysterious, and so much more.  We left the ship about 9am and met our tour guide.  Over a year ago, Gpa setup a private tour for 8 people.  Our guide met us at the pier and  off we went in a nice van for the tour.  The first place we stopped was the crater from the island’s largest volcano.

We then went to see the real reason we were here, the legendary moai.

Here is beautiful panorama that Nanoo took.  This is the largest collection of moai on the island.  All together there about 1000 of them.

Wow!  A Gpa selfie with a moai.  Sorry, I couldn’t resist.  Nanoo doesn’t like selfies!

We then went to the quarry where most of the moai were carved.  There are over three hundred here that were never moved.  Most of them just look like heads now, but they are really a full sized moai.  Over the years, they have been covered by landslides and erosion.  If you look at the background in this picture, you can see where the rock for the moai has been carved out of the hillside.

So that is a quick look at Easter Island.  We had a wonderful day there.  We are now on our way to Papette, and Bora Bora in the Society Islands.  Before that we will do a stop at Pitcairn Island.  This tiny island is one of the most remote spots on earth.  It is famous because the mutineers of the HMS Bounty (Mutiny on the Bounty) landed here in 1789 after stealing the ship.  After arriving, they burned the ship so no one could leave.  Their descendants are the only inhabitants of the island,  52 people are now living here.  We can’t go ashore because there is no place for our ship to dock, but the island people will come out to our ship to sell crafts that they make.  Should be interesting.
Bye for now.  We love you!
