Pitcairn Island

Hi Girlies,

You asked about the moai.   Why are they there?  What do they mean?  The moai were carved from volcanic rock by the Rapa Nui people between the years of 1250 and 1500.  The moai represent the faces of Rapa Nui ancestors.  They are placed to gaze inland (not out to sea) to keep watch over the Rapa Nui.  Today, of Easter Island’s 6000 people, about half are descendants of the Rapa Nui.

Yesterday (Sunday) we stopped at Pitcairn Island.  This island is a tiny place in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.  It is behind Nanoo as we approached.

This is what the whole island looks like, 1 mile wide and 2 miles long.  Think you would like to live here, thousands of miles from anywhere?

We couldn’t go on the island as there is no place for the ship to dock.  Only 50 people live on Pitcairn and most of them came out to our ship.  They make crafts which they brought out to the ship to sell.

This pretty little girl is the only child that is living on the island.  She looked lonely, I’ll bet she would like to have you for friends.  Can you imagine being the only child in Brambleton?

I won’t tell the story of Pitcairn on this blog.  There is some other information about it on the blog Nanoo is doing.  You can Google Pitcairn and read all about the mutiny of the HMS Bounty in 1789.  All the people on Pitcairn are direct descendants of the Bounty mutineers.

So, that is a little look at Pitcairn.  Now we are sailing toward Papeete and then Bora Bora.  These island should be very beautiful.

Love you and miss you.
